# Witwenpalais

Eutin, Kreis Ostholstein, Schleswig-Holstein

Witwenpalais stands in Eutin (Kreis Ostholstein), in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Facing the market square of Eutin stands the Witwenpalais, a town palace built in 1786 and 1787 for Duchess Ulrike Friederike Wilhelmine of Hesse-Kassel, widow of Duke Friedrich August I of Oldenburg, who had died the previous year. The duchess herself died before the building was finished, so it never served its intended purpose as a widow's seat, though it kept the name. Its eleven-bay facade, marking the shift from late Baroque to Classicism, makes it one of the town's most notable secular buildings alongside the Schloss and the neighbouring town hall. Inside, rooms arranged in enfilade retain decoration in the Zopfstil manner.
