# Wilhelmstein

Wunstorf, Region Hannover, Niedersachsen

Wilhelmstein stands in Wunstorf (Region Hannover), in Lower Saxony, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 18th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Festung Wilhelmstein stands on a nearly square artificial island in the middle of the Steinhuder Meer lake, in Lower Saxony. Count Wilhelm zu Schaumburg-Lippe had it built between 1761 and 1767 to defend his small county, then home to 17,000 subjects, against possible annexation by larger powers. The fortress originally followed a star-shaped bastioned layout typical of 18th-century military architecture, later absorbed into the island's present square outline. Visitors can still see casemates, several buildings rebuilt in stone during the 19th century, and a small original harbour.
