# Wewelsburg

Büren, Kreis Paderborn, Nordrhein-Westfalen

Wewelsburg stands in Büren (Kreis Paderborn), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 17th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Wewelsburg stands on a spur above the Alme valley, in the Kreis of Paderborn. Its triangular plan, carried by three towers linked by thick walls, makes it one of the few structures of this shape in Germany. The present building, erected between 1603 and 1609 for the prince-bishop of Paderborn Dietrich von Fürstenberg, incorporates the remains of two earlier structures on the same site. The castle now houses a historical museum devoted to the prince-bishopric of Paderborn and a memorial museum on the period when the SS occupied the site from 1934 to 1945.
