Built beside the Hörsel river as a stronghold meant to keep the burghers of Eisenach in check, it later served as an administrative seat, a hunting lodge, and eventually a barracks, before being demolished in the late 19th century to make way for the town's theatre. Today only occasional buried traces beneath the theatre square hint at where it once stood.
