The Wartburg overlooks the town of Eisenach from a rocky spur at the edge of the Thuringian Forest. Founded in the late 11th century by the Ludowingian counts, it owes its fame to major episodes of German history: the residence of Saint Elisabeth of Thuringia in the 13th century, Martin Luther's translation of the New Testament there in 1521 and 1522, and the student festival of 1817. The Romanesque palace, largely preserved, ranks among the few surviving buildings of its kind in the German-speaking world, while the rest of the complex bears the mark of the 19th-century restoration carried out under Carl Alexander of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999, the fortress draws visitors both for its architecture and for the weight of its history.
