The Tomburg is a castle ruin crowning the Tomberg, an isolated volcanic hill near Wormersdorf in the municipality of Rheinbach. Founded around 900, it became around the year 1000 the residence of Count Palatine Ezzo and his wife Matilda, sister of Emperor Otto III, before being destroyed in 1473 and never rebuilt. Roughly 70% of the fortified hilltop survives today, along with remains of the keep and a 46-metre-deep well, set within a protected natural area.
