Schloss Veldenz, despite its name suggesting a palace, is actually a castle ruin set on a rocky spur above a side valley of the Mosel. It served as the principal stronghold of the Counts of Veldenz and was, in the 15th century, the largest fortified site on the central Mosel. Visitors can still make out two substantial bastions and the palas with its distinctive stepped gable, though the keep was never rebuilt.
