Nymphenburg Palace lies in Neuhausen-Nymphenburg, west of central Munich, and served as the summer residence of the Wittelsbach electors and kings of Bavaria. Begun as a modest 17th-century pavilion, the building grew over two centuries into a long three-wing complex flanked by a semicircle of smaller pavilions. Visitors can see richly decorated rooms, including the Stone Hall with its ceiling fresco of Helios, and the porcelain manufactory still operating in one of the pavilions. The palace park, with its canals and small park castles, extends to the west and forms part of any visit.
