Schloss Johannisburg stands above the river Main in Aschaffenburg, Bavaria. Built between 1605 and 1614 by the Strasbourg architect Georg Ridinger for the Archbishop-Elector of Mainz, Johann Schweikhard von Cronberg, it served as the second residence of the Mainz prince-bishops until 1803. Its red sandstone bulk, arranged as four symmetrical wings around a square courtyard, still incorporates an older Gothic keep at its centre. Visitors today find a picture gallery with works by Lucas Cranach the Elder, rooms furnished in Neoclassical style, and a collection of architectural models made of cork.
