Schloss Elisabethenburg overlooks the town of Meiningen, on the edge of the old town by the Werra river. Built at the end of the 17th century for the Dukes of Saxe-Meiningen, its three wings and central tower form a shape resembling the letter E, often linked to the name of Duchess Elisabeth Eleonore. It served as the ducal residence until 1918 and was frequented by musicians such as Johannes Brahms, Max Reger and Hans von Bülow. The building now houses the Meiningen museums along with archives and a concert hall.
