Schloss Charlottenburg, in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf (Berlin), Berlin, is the largest surviving royal residence in the German capital. Begun in 1695 for Sophie Charlotte and steadily enlarged through the 18th century under Frederick I and later Frederick the Great, it combines baroque, rococo and classical elements added by successive architects Eosander, Knobelsdorff and Langhans. Heavily damaged during the Second World War, the building was rebuilt to its original appearance and now houses museum collections set within grounds first laid out as a French garden and later reshaped in the English style.
