Schloss Broich stands on the bank of the Ruhr in Mülheim an der Ruhr, built over the remains of a fortified camp erected at the end of the 9th century to hold back Viking raids. The lords of Broich rebuilt the site from the 11th century onward and expanded it into a proper stronghold during the 12th and 13th centuries, adding a massive keep and a strengthened ring wall. Besieged repeatedly during the Middle Ages, most notably in 1443, the castle bears the marks of these destructions and rebuildings, down to the 17th century timber-framed upper section known as the Hochschloss.
