The building traces back to a commandery house of the Knights Hospitaller, founded in the late 13th century and repeatedly altered before taking on its present appearance during a costly renovation carried out in 1788 by the last commander. Sold into private ownership in the 19th century, the building has housed a family-run winery, the Schlosskellerei Affaltrach, since 1928, and this business continues today. Modern winery buildings now surround the old residential core.
