Sausenburg Castle stands on the Sausenberg, a 665-metre hill at the edge of the Black Forest near Kandern. This ruin was the seat of the Margraves of Hachberg-Sausenberg, who built it in the 13th century after acquiring the site from the Monastery of St Blaise. What remains today is a circular rampart, a tower, and several wall fragments, all that is left of a stronghold destroyed in the 17th century. Visitors come mainly for the ruins themselves and for the view from this elevated position.
