Standing on a rocky peak above the Moselle, the Reichsburg Cochem overlooks the town it symbolizes. The fortress traces back to around 1100, when it functioned as a toll post on the river, later becoming an administrative seat of the empire and then of the archbishopric of Trier. Destroyed in the 17th century, it was rebuilt between 1868 and 1877 by the Berlin merchant Louis Fréderic Jacques Ravené, in the neo-Gothic taste typical of the era's castle romanticism. What visitors see today is thus largely a 19th-century reinvention, built upon medieval foundations.
