The Plassenburg stands on a hill above the town of Kulmbach, overlooking the Main valley. Once a residence and stronghold of the Hohenzollern family, it preserves the Renaissance courtyard known as the Schöner Hof, built during the reconstruction directed by architect Caspar Vischer. The complex now houses several museums, including the German Tin Figure Museum and a regional museum devoted to the Obermain area. Visitors come both for the residential architecture and for the massive bastions that recall its military past.
