The Palais Schwerin stands at the corner of Mühlendamm and Molkenmarkt in Berlin, right next to the Alte Münze and facing the Nikolaiviertel quarter. Built after the great fire of 1690, it took its present form under Jean de Bodt, a Huguenot architect in Prussian service, who remodeled it for state minister Otto von Schwerin in the early 18th century. Over the centuries the building housed a tobacco administration, a court, a prison and a police headquarters, before being largely gutted and extended in the 1930s while its facade was kept intact. It now houses the Franco-German Youth Office.
