# Palais Bechtolsheim

Eisenach, Wartburgkreis, Thüringen

Palais Bechtolsheim stands in Eisenach (Wartburgkreis), in Thuringia, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Palais Bechtolsheim, also known as the Kanzlerpalais, stands in Eisenach's old town, right against the former city wall. Formed from two townhouses bought in 1752, it was remodeled in the 1780s for the von Mauchenheim-Bechtolsheim family, who gave it the classicist facade that makes it the oldest surviving building of this style in the city. As the residence of the Duchy of Saxe-Weimar's vice-chancellor, the house was visited several times by Goethe. Its formal rooms still display elaborate stucco decoration, though the original furniture and paintings have not survived.
