The Oberschloss stands in Bonfeld, a district of Bad Rappenau, on the site of a medieval stronghold whose exact appearance and origins remain unknown. The present building was raised from 1748 onward by the barons von Gemmingen, who had the old fortress torn down to make way for this new schloss on its foundations. Its name simply reflects its elevated position above the Altes Schloss, built in the 16th century further down the slope. The von Gemmingen family also had extensive gardens and a plant nursery laid out around the estate from 1778.
