Nuremberg Castle rises on a sandstone ridge above the old town, overlooking the Pegnitz river. It is in fact made up of two distinct complexes, the older Burggrafenburg and the Kaiserburg where Holy Roman emperors once resided, along with buildings added later by the free imperial city. Visitors can see the round Sinwell Tower, a two storey Romanesque chapel and a deep well reaching fifty metres down to water level. Heavily damaged in the Second World War, the castle was rebuilt following its historic forms.
