The Nürburg stands in ruins atop a volcanic basalt cone, inside the North Loop of the Nürburgring racetrack, which took its name from the castle. Founded in the 12th century by the von Are family, it was extended in three successive building phases before being destroyed by French troops in 1689. The 20-metre keep, restored in the 19th century, is open as a viewing tower above the remains of the surrounding walls.
