The Marksburg rises above the town of Braubach on the banks of the Rhine, in Rhineland-Palatinate. Built from the 13th century onward on a site occupied since the 12th, it survived the Middle Ages and the following centuries without falling into ruin, an unusual fate among the hill castles of the Middle Rhine. Visitors can see a Gothic complex with preserved interior rooms, a distinctive keep shaped like a butter churn, and a chapel dedicated to St Mark that gave the castle its present name. The site forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley.
