# Löwenburg (Bad Honnef)

Bad Honnef, Rhein-Sieg-Kreis, Nordrhein-Westfalen

Löwenburg (Bad Honnef) stands in Bad Honnef (Rhein-Sieg-Kreis), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Recorded dating: 13th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Löwenburg is the ruin of a medieval hilltop castle standing at 455 metres on a volcanic peak of the Siebengebirge, overlooking the Rhine valley near Bonn. Built in the second half of the 12th century by the Counts of Sayn as a border stronghold against the Electorate of Cologne's Drachenfels and Wolkenburg castles, it fell into decline after the fighting of the late 16th century. What remains today are the exposed foundations of the main and outer baileys, a cistern, and the uneven stump of the former keep. It is one of the most visited hiking destinations in the range, chiefly for its panoramic outlook.
