Built at the very end of the Ancien Régime for the last Elector of Trier, it reflects a French-influenced neoclassicism uncommon in Germany at that time. The city-facing facade opens onto a broad forecourt flanked by two curved wings, while the main building looks out over the Rhine valley. The palace now houses federal administrative offices, which limits access to the interior.
