Standing at the center of Bonn, the Kurfürstliches Schloss once served as the residence of the prince-archbishops of Cologne before becoming, from 1818 onward, the main building of the university. Its austere facade, echoing the Escorial, opens onto the wide Hofgarten park, while the Koblenzer Tor, an ornate baroque gateway, contrasts sharply with the plainness of the rest of the building. Ravaged by fire in 1777 and again by bombing in 1944, the palace was rebuilt more than once and now houses university administration and faculties.
