The Hellgrevenhof stands at the western edge of Eisenach's old town, right by the former Georgentor gate. Its oldest section, a stone kemenate dating from the Romanesque period, is considered the oldest surviving civic building within the city walls. The complex now houses Eisenach's municipal library, alongside a decorative eighteenth century star vault and traces of wall paintings showing a hunting scene. The Storchenturm, once a watch and prison tower of the town's fortifications, belongs to the same protected ensemble.
