The Harzburg lies in ruins atop the Großer Burgberg above Bad Harzburg, in the Landkreis Goslar, in Lower Saxony. It was built in the 11th century on the orders of Emperor Henry IV to guard the area against the Saxons, and was altered around 1180 under Frederick Barbarossa, who used it as a military camp. Otto IV died there in 1218, and the stronghold later remained in the hands of the Dukes of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel before being torn down after 1650. Visitors today find masonry remains on a height overlooking the town.
