# Fürstbischöfliches Schloss Münster

Stadtbezirk Münster-Mitte, Münster, Nordrhein-Westfalen

Fürstbischöfliches Schloss Münster stands in Stadtbezirk Münster-Mitte (Münster), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 18th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Schloss Münster stands on the site of a former citadel, cleared after the Seven Years' War made the city's fortifications obsolete. Built between 1767 and 1787 for prince-bishop Maximilian Friedrich von Königsegg-Rothenfels, it was designed by architect Johann Conrad Schlaun in a late baroque style, its facades combining pale Baumberg sandstone with red brick. Wartime bombing in 1945 gutted the interiors, and only the former palace chapel survives from the original decoration, now split into two university lecture halls. Since 1954 the building has served as the seat of the University of Münster.
