Rastatt Fortress was one of four federal fortresses built by the German Confederation in the nineteenth century, erected between 1842 and 1852 to secure the Upper Rhine against France. It became a focal point of the Baden Revolution of 1849, when the garrison mutinied and sided with the insurgent democratic government before Prussian troops crushed the uprising. Given up in 1890, most of the fortress was later torn down, though a surviving stretch of casemates in the Leopold Fortress can still be visited.
