# Festung Minden

Minden, Kreis Minden-Lübbecke, Nordrhein-Westfalen

Festung Minden stands in Minden (Kreis Minden-Lübbecke), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Festung Minden was not a single building but a defensive system that once encircled the town of Minden on the Weser, at a point where the river could be forded. A first town wall is documented from the 13th century, replaced from 1501 onward by bastioned ramparts with flooded ditches and five fortified gates. The works were strengthened under Prussian rule after 1815 to guard the town and control trade routes through the region, until the system lost its military purpose in 1866 with Prussia's annexation of the neighbouring Kingdom of Hanover, after which it was dismantled. Visiting the site today means following the former fortification line through the modern townscape rather than entering one standing structure.
