Seat of the prince-bishops from 1253 to 1719, it combines a small church dating from the early 11th century with fortifications and a palace reshaped during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Visitors can trace centuries of episcopal power, from the keep and deep well built around 1200 to the bastions added after the 1525 siege. The site today houses museums set within the former residence buildings.
