# Festung Grauerort

Stade, Landkreis Stade, Niedersachsen

Festung Grauerort stands in Stade (Landkreis Stade), in Lower Saxony, Germany. Recorded dating: 19th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Grauerort Fortress is a Prussian artillery fort built between 1868 and 1873 on the banks of the Elbe near Stade to guard the approach to the Port of Hamburg. Its hexagonal layout follows the river levee, with a high earth rampart, casemates facing the water and a still visible moat. Taken out of active military service in 1888, it later served as a mine depot, an anti-aircraft position and a shelter before falling into disrepair. Since the late 1990s a local association has been restoring the site, which now functions as a museum and event venue.
