# Festung Dömitz

Dömitz, Landkreis Ludwigslust-Parchim, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

Festung Dömitz stands in Dömitz (Landkreis Ludwigslust-Parchim), in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 16th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Dömitz Fortress stands on a strategic position along the Elbe River, within the town of Dömitz. Built between 1559 and 1565 for Duke John Albert I of Mecklenburg, it was the largest fortification ever constructed in Mecklenburg, designed by the Italian engineer Francesco a Bornau. Its pentagonal layout with five bastions, named Kavalier, Held, Drache, Greif and Burg, is still clearly visible, along with the tall curtain walls linking them. The writer Fritz Reuter served the final part of his prison sentence here between 1838 and 1840, an episode he later described in one of his books.
