The Feste Kaiser Alexander was once one of Europe's largest single fortifications, built on a ridge of the Hunsrück overlooking Koblenz. Erected between 1816 and 1824 by Prussian military engineers, it formed part of the great fortress system of Koblenz. Demolished in 1922 under French pressure after the First World War, almost nothing remains except the Löwentor, its former neoclassical main gate. The surrounding grounds have long since been built over.
