# Christiansburg (Varel)

Varel, Landkreis Friesland, Niedersachsen

Christiansburg (Varel) stands in Varel (Landkreis Friesland), in Lower Saxony, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Christiansburg was a fortified port complex begun in 1681 near Varel on the orders of King Christian V of Denmark, who had just inherited the county of Oldenburg. Built as a star shaped stronghold after the pattern of Danish fortifications, it combined ramparts, water filled ditches and a harbour intended to secure Danish claims against the rival Aldenburg family. Poor planning meant the harbour silted up quickly under the tidal conditions of the North Sea, leading to the fortress being abandoned as early as 1694 and its buildings torn down by 1696. What remains today are traces of the earthworks south of Varel's harbour and the harbour basin itself, once part of the fortified site.
