# Carlsburg (Lehe)

Bremerhaven, Bremerhaven, Freie Hansestadt Bremen

Carlsburg (Lehe) stands in Bremerhaven (Bremerhaven), in Freie Hansestadt Bremen, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Carlsburg refers to a fortified town that the Swedish crown attempted to establish in the late 17th century at the mouth of the Geeste into the Weser, on the site of present-day Bremerhaven. Intended to rival Bremen and give Sweden a naval stronghold on the North Sea, the project never grew beyond its earthworks and a handful of military buildings before being given up around 1700. It is therefore not a castle in the usual sense but the remnant of an unfinished planned town, whose traces were largely levelled when Bremerhaven was founded in the 19th century.
