Set along a narrow ridge above the old town of Burghausen, this fortress stretches for over a kilometre, making it the longest fortified complex in Europe. Its six successive courtyards, built almost entirely of tuff stone, reflect its history as a residence of the Lower Bavarian dukes, especially around 1480 to 1503. Visitors today can explore the main courtyard with its ducal palace and outbuildings, while the whole site runs along the ridge separating the Salzach river from the Wöhrsee lake.
