Windeck Castle stands as a ruin on the Schlossberg hill above Weinheim, more than 220 metres high, reached on foot or by car. Built in the 12th century to defend the possessions of Lorsch Abbey, it was destroyed by French troops in 1674 and never regained a military role. Visitors today can explore the keep, the partly preserved residential building and an inner courtyard that hosts a beer garden in warmer months. The 28-metre keep is climbed via more than a hundred steps and rewards visitors with views over the Bergstraße and the Rhine valley.
