Founded as early as the 9th century on a rocky spur, it is the ancestral seat of the House of Wettin, the dynasty from which several European ruling families descend, including the present royal houses of the United Kingdom and Belgium. The site still comprises an upper and a lower castle, both reshaped repeatedly from the Middle Ages to the 19th century, and it later served as a school under the Nazi regime and then as an educational institution after the war.
