# Burg Rötteln

Lörrach, Landkreis Lörrach, Baden-Württemberg

Burg Rötteln stands in Lörrach (Landkreis Lörrach), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 11th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Perched on a rocky spur above the Wiese valley, Rötteln Castle forms one of the largest fortified ruins in southwestern Germany. Its two defensive towers and keep, set at an unusual 45-degree angle to the site's main axis, recall a history that began with the lords of Rötteln and continued under the margraves of Sausenberg and Baden-Durlach. Badly damaged during the Thirty Years' War, the stronghold lost its significance for good after being destroyed in 1678 during the Franco-Dutch War. Restored and maintained since the 19th century, it remains a landmark visible from Lörrach and the surrounding area.
