Castle Normannstein sits on a rocky spur above Treffurt, overlooking the Werra valley near the border with Hesse. This well-preserved ruin combines a Romanesque round tower with two square towers and the remains of several residential buildings built up between the early Middle Ages and the 15th century. The large square tower now houses a museum devoted to the castles that once guarded the Werra valley, and its covered viewing platform looks out over the town and surrounding countryside.
