Fürsteneck Castle stands on a small plateau above Eiterfeld in Hesse, on a site once fortified by Kloster Fulda to guard its border. What survives today reflects centuries of rebuilding: a Romanesque twin window from the 12th century remains above the main entrance, while the old keep, with its heavy cornerstones, points to origins earlier than the first written record of 1309. Since 1952 the buildings have housed an academy for vocational and cultural education, remodelled by architect Otto Bartning, which makes the castle a working institution rather than a static monument. Visitors mainly experience the exterior and the architecture of the grounds, since the site remains dedicated to this educational use.
