# Burg Creuzburg

Creuzburg, Wartburgkreis, Thüringen

Burg Creuzburg stands in Creuzburg (Wartburgkreis), in Thuringia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 12th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Burg Creuzburg stands above the Werra valley northwest of Eisenach, on a height that once guarded the town founded in 1213 and its bridge. Built between 1165 and 1170 for Landgrave Ludwig II, it served as a residence of the Ludowingian dynasty and was a favoured retreat of Landgravine Elisabeth of Thuringia, who gave birth to her son Hermann there in 1222. The Romanesque ring wall, the keep with its so-called Elisabeth chamber, and remnants of the great hall still survive, though later centuries added a residential wing.
