Burg Altenstein refers to the medieval stronghold that once stood on the site of today's Schloss Altenstein, on a spur of the Thuringian Forest near Bad Liebenstein. Founded around 1120 by the influential von Stein family under the authority of Fulda Abbey, it held a strategic position on the edge of the Mark Breitungen and along the old road through Schweina. Burned in 1554 during the Second Margrave War and rebuilt on a more modest Renaissance scale, it was finally destroyed by arson in 1733, giving way to the present Schloss, begun in 1736. Buried remains, uncovered during archaeological excavations between 1995 and 2005, still lie beneath the park and the cellars of the Schloss.
