The Brunswick Palace stands on the central square of Braunschweig, on the site of a former ducal residence of the House of Welf. The building visible today reproduces the neoclassical façade designed by Carl Theodor Ottmer between 1833 and 1841, raised after fire destroyed the earlier ducal palace during the unrest of 1830. Demolished in 1960 following wartime damage, the structure was rebuilt between 2005 and 2007 and now houses a museum, a public library and an adjoining shopping arcade.
