The Konradsburg sits on a hilltop northeast of the Harz mountains, near Ermsleben in the municipality of Falkenstein/Harz. First recorded in 1021, it was never a stronghold in the strict sense, since it lacks any watchtower or keep; instead it became a monastery, first Benedictine and later Carthusian, replacing the earlier noble residence on the site. Visitors today can see the surviving choir and crypt of the former three-aisled Romanesque basilica, along with remains of the monastic buildings, whose carved capitals show a mix of influences including Rhenish and French styles. Left to decay for decades after 1945, the site was rescued through volunteer efforts beginning in the 1980s and is now partly open to visitors.
