# Altenburg

Bamberg, Bamberg, Bayern

Altenburg stands in Bamberg (Bamberg), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 12th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Standing on a hill above Bamberg, Burg Altenburg occupies a fortified site first recorded in 1109, when Bishop Otto I granted it to the collegiate church of St James. The keep, gatehouse and surrounding walls seen today date largely from the 14th and 15th centuries, when the castle served as a residence for the prince-bishops of Bamberg. Burned down in 1553 on the orders of Margrave Albrecht Alcibiades of Brandenburg-Kulmbach, it was not rebuilt until the late 17th century under the Schönborn archbishops, following designs by Johann Dientzenhofer. The palace building visitors see inside the walls, in historicist style, was only completed in 1902 to plans by architect Gustav Haeberle.
