The Alte Burg occupies a hill spur northeast of Bad Münstereifel, overlooking the Erft valley. Rather than a castle in the usual sense, it is a large circular rampart, the remains of a Carolingian-era refuge fortification from the 9th century. It once sheltered the local population and guarded a daughter priory of Prüm Abbey. Visitors can still make out the stone foundation of a round tower, along with a motte at the northeastern end of the site.
