# Albrechtsburg

Meißen, Landkreis Meißen, Sachsen

Albrechtsburg stands in Meißen (Landkreis Meißen), in Saxony, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 10th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Albrechtsburg rises above the Elbe at Meißen, on the site where King Henry I had a timber stronghold built in 929, marking the origin of the Saxon state. The present palace, erected between 1471 and 1524 for the Wettin brothers Ernst and Albrecht, is regarded as the first German building conceived as a residence rather than a fortress. Its highlights include the great spiral staircase designed by master builder Arnold von Westfalen and the cell vaults found throughout the rooms. Later home to Europe's first porcelain manufactory, the Burg also displays extensive 19th-century wall paintings recounting its history.
