In Clermont-Ferrand, today's town hall stands on the site of a vanished medieval stronghold, the château de Clermont, whose Latin name Clarus Mons gave the city its own. Built of arkose, a pale stone that catches the light, the fortress crowned the fortified hill from the early Middle Ages until it gave way to the Palais de Boulogne and later to the present city hall. Nothing of the original château remains visible, yet its memory still shapes the layout of the old town.
